How to Read Electric Dirt Bike Range and Ride-Time Claims

“Up to 90 minutes” sounds exact, but it is not useful until you know who rode, where, in which mode, at what temperature, with which tyre pressure, on what battery and what counted as the end of the test.

Electric dirt bike range is not a fixed property like frame colour. It is the result of stored energy, system efficiency and a changing workload. A responsible claim describes the test and its limits.

Range and ride time are different questions

  • Range is distance travelled before the defined end point.
  • Ride time is elapsed or moving time before the same end point.

A slow skills session can have a long elapsed time but little distance. A faster continuous loop can cover more distance in less time. Stop-start riding may record substantial elapsed time while the motor is idle between attempts.

Ask whether a published time means clock time, moving time or motor-on time. Ask whether a distance came from GPS, wheel revolutions or an estimate.

Start with nominal energy—but do not stop there

If a battery is labelled in volts and amp-hours, nominal energy can be approximated as:

Wh ≈ nominal V × Ah

A hypothetical 36 V, 10 Ah label therefore represents 360 Wh nominal. This is not a Beshare specification and it is not a 360 Wh guarantee at the tyre.

A tempting next step is:

hours = Wh ÷ watts

That only works when usable energy and average electrical draw are known. The motor’s advertised rating is usually not the average draw for an entire ride. The bike may demand less while coasting and more during acceleration or climbing. The battery-management system retains operating limits, and conversion losses occur between the cells and wheel.

Use the calculation to detect implausible claims or define a test—not to promise a child’s ride time.

The conditions that change a result

Australian Government EV guidance notes that range depends on vehicle size, efficiency, driving style, terrain and climate. Bosch’s range guidance for its own e-bike systems also identifies temperature, start-stop frequency, tyre pressure and mass. A throttle-controlled off-road bike is not the same as a pedal-assist bicycle, but the underlying lesson is sound: operating conditions belong beside the number.

For a children’s electric dirt bike, record at least:

Rider and load

  • rider mass with gear;
  • any approved accessories;
  • riding experience and throttle behaviour.

Do not publish a child’s name or identifiable data. A test report can use an anonymised rider code.

Bike configuration

  • exact model, batch and serial/test unit;
  • battery model, chemistry if documented, rated V/Ah/Wh and age;
  • battery state of health if measured by an approved method;
  • power mode and any speed/control setting;
  • tyre model and pressure set to the manual’s value;
  • gearing, wheel and approved accessory configuration;
  • maintenance state, especially dragging brakes or chain condition.

Course and riding pattern

  • surface: sealed, hard-packed, grass, sand, mud or mixed;
  • distance per lap and elevation change;
  • proportion of stopping, low-speed drills, cruising and climbing;
  • wind and ambient temperature;
  • whether the bike cooled between runs.

Start and end definitions

  • how the starting charge was established;
  • whether the battery rested or cooled after charging;
  • whether the test ended at a displayed percentage, reduced-power mode, protective cut-off or another documented point;
  • whether the battery was deliberately fully discharged.

Do not repeatedly run a battery to a deep cut-off unless the manufacturer’s test procedure expressly calls for it and a competent technician controls the process. A consumer log should follow normal-use instructions.

“Up to” needs a best-case protocol

An up to claim usually represents a favourable result, not a typical one. It can still be informative if the best-case conditions are visible and reproducible. Without them, the phrase moves all uncertainty onto the buyer.

Ask for three levels of evidence:

  1. Claim definition: distance or time, and the end point.
  2. Test protocol: rider/load, mode, course, weather, bike and battery.
  3. Results distribution: more than one run or rider, including median or range—not only the best run.

If only one run exists, it should be labelled a single observation, not a general product capability.

A more honest way to present results

Instead of “90-minute battery life”, a useful report might say:

Test unit [identifier], new battery [label details], rider-plus-gear mass [value], lowest mode, hard-packed closed loop [distance/elevation], [temperature] °C, specified tyre pressures. Across [number] runs, moving time was [range] and distance was [range]. Test ended at [defined condition]. Results are observations under these conditions, not a guarantee.

Every bracket requires actual data. If the business has not run the test, the brackets stay empty and the claim does not publish.

A parent’s normal-use log

You can learn how the bike behaves in your family’s permitted setting without turning a child’s session into a laboratory.

Stop using or charging a battery that is damaged, swollen, leaking, overheating, venting gas or otherwise behaving abnormally. The ACCC lithium-ion guide lists these warning signs. A range log is never a reason to continue through an abnormal condition.

Common comparison errors

Comparing a new battery with an unknown used battery

Battery age alone does not reveal state of health. Storage temperature, charge history, damage and cell balance can matter. A second-hand seller’s ride-time memory is not a battery assessment.

Treating the motor rating as average consumption

A 500 W motor label does not mean the bike continuously draws 500 W, nor that 500 W reaches the ground. The rating’s definition and real duty cycle are needed.

Ignoring rider-plus-gear mass

Product pages often list a rider weight but test with a different load or do not say. The mass used in a performance test must be stated. It still does not determine fit.

Mixing elapsed and moving time

Ten minutes of instruction between drills can inflate elapsed session time without using much drive energy. Record both if the distinction matters.

Reporting a dashboard percentage as laboratory capacity

A display is an interface, not necessarily a calibrated energy meter. Use it consistently for the same bike, but do not claim precise usable Wh without an appropriate measurement method.

What to ask a seller in one message

For the ride-time or range figure shown, please provide the exact model and battery tested, battery age and label rating, rider-plus-gear mass, mode, tyre pressure, surface, elevation, temperature, start and end definitions, whether time is elapsed or moving, number of runs, and the observed range of results.

If that evidence is unavailable, treat the figure as an unverified marketing estimate. Build the purchase decision around fit, location, controls, battery support and an acceptable conservative uncertainty—not the maximum claim.

Return to the evidence-first parent brief before letting runtime dominate the purchase. If V, Ah, Wh or motor ratings remain unclear, normalise them with the specifications explainer.
